God Chooses the Insignificant

I find myself receiving numerous emails of late with Christmas greetings and seasonal thoughts. Each of them has different emphases. Each are equally important and convey aspects touching on the Advent season. Some are quick reads while others are lengthier and deeper in thought.
I have been pondering what I would write in my blog this month, desiring to write about some theme or aspect that stirs fresh in my heart in relation to this Christmas season. Nothing particular had come to mind but then a short video with a Christmas greeting shared by a friend stirred my heart.
Micah 5:2 says, “But you, Bethlehem, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me, the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.”
God chose little insignificant Bethlehem as the birth place of the Messiah, the Promised Saviour of the world. The Child who would carry ‘the government upon His shoulder, and be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.” (Is. 9:6-7)
Mary and Joseph, a seemingly insignificant couple, arrive in an unusual location to give birth to this One foretold in Micah hundreds of years earlier. A simple and unsophisticated stable and manger became the resting place of this prophesied One. God incarnate came to earth as a little baby, born in a manger in 'little' Bethlehem.
Augustine wrote, “He was created by a mother whom He created. He was carried by hands that He formed. He cried in the manger in wordless infancy, He the Word, without whom all human eloquence is mute.”
The shepherds, seen as second-class citizens, are visited by a heavenly host, serenading them from the heavens, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” They brought good tidings of great joy and the announcement of a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger – a ‘Saviour, who is Christ the Lord’. God handpicked unpretentious shepherds to hear this joyous announcement the whole world awaited.
God often chooses the insignificant and the unassuming to be instruments of His love and compassion. He delights in making use of the humble of heart for His greater purposes and glory.
Each one of us are those who He equally chooses to touch the lives of others, those in our spheres of influence whether our spouses, children and family, our workplaces and our communities. We, too, insignificant as we may feel, are chosen to be used by the God of the universe to be channels of His love and mercy.
May the God of all Creation fill you with all hope, peace, joy and love this Advent season. May you be the light of His presence to those around you, that they too may come and behold the Babe, the Saviour of the World.
