Renewed Consecration

“… ‘Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.’ And Joshua said to the people, sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” ~ Joshua 3:4-5
I am not sure if you have ever made a practice of the beginning the new year with consecrating everything you have back to the Lord, but I know I had never fully considered this possibility – particularly as they related to money and possessions - until about seven years ago when reading a book by Howard Dayton, “ Your Money Counts ”.
After being asked recently to take the lead in a prayer of consecration for a ministry, I decided to do a word study of the word ‘consecrate’.
The word ‘consecrate’ has various meanings, some of which include “to hold with an open hand, to rub with oil, to set apart for sacred purposes, to devote, to pronounce as clean, to prepare, to sanctify, to purify or to leave behind”. The depth of each of these meanings have significance as I reflected upon them.
I felt on a personal level, as we took some time to pray at the beginning of this new year, that my wife and I were to consecrate or sanctify ourselves unto Him and His greater purposes. This included releasing back to Him our calling, relationships, possessions, finances and investments back to the Lord. I sensed that the significance of doing this was far greater than I could appreciate at this moment in time.
As Oswald Chambers once said, “Consecration is the act of continually separating myself from everything except that which God has appointed me do. It is not a one-time experience but an ongoing process. Am I continually separating myself and looking to God every day of my life?”
This act of consecration is all about referencing the Lord with every decision and plan I make. He sees the greater picture and what He is facilitating in this season of my life – our lives -individually and corporately. Do I trust Him with every aspect? Enough to release it all back to Him so that I keep my focus on Him and not on those things that may not be overly relevant in the days ahead?
I sense how important it is to hold everything with an open hand, to set all things apart to Him, to allow Him to do as He pleases – in every area of my life. Where I am still holding on in fear, to allow the oil of His presence to seep into those areas of my heart and bring release.
There is a place of peace knowing He is more than able to look after every aspect of my life.
Have you consecrated yourself and all that you have back to Him this new year?
