A Kingdom Mindset

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
Jesus spent much of His time teaching His disciples and the masses about the Kingdom. Jesus fully understood the difference between the observable and tangible realities of day to day living familiar to those around Him. He, however, wanted them to begin to grasp another realm – the realm of the Kingdom of God. Jesus sought to familiarize them with a different perspective and ultimately shape in a new way the mindset of Kingdom living.
Jesus sought to bring understanding and insights about the Kingdom, that His followers would discern the significance of each realm. The natural was finite but eternity was far greater of a reality and more impacting on their lives if they could grasp the concept.
Could His disciples and followers see Him as a king, not on the earth to overthrow the Roman occupation as they hoped, but to introduce another kingdom, one equally challenging and filled with battles of a spiritual nature? A battle that contended for their very hearts and souls. Jesus wanted the masses to see Him as the true King of an unseen realm into which they had been invited. His heart was to give them a glimpse of a kingdom where He was King, and although filled with spiritual battles that involved principalities and powers (Eph. 3:10), he had disarmed these by His gift and sacrifice.
Our money and possessions are a part of the battle ground. They were never intended to give us security, comfort or something in which to put our trust. In fact, they are tools in the King’s hands to test our hearts and allegiance and to advance the kingdom. Will we serve Him by placing Him on the throne of our hearts or will we serve another – unrighteous mammon, allowing it to be seated upon the throne of our heart? One invites and blesses while the other demands and dictates.
We read in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 “ Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they may be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”
The Lord makes it clear that finances are not the issue, rather, the problem is what value and importance we place on them. We are to place more focus on the good works we can accomplish through the use of our finances, recognizing that the fruits of our good works are of future importance and value.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:33 still confronts us today. We are challenged to pursue the kingdom of God. Whom we serve and what we draw comfort from reflects who is King in our lives and mindset.
