What Seeps into Your Heart?

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Saviour and my God.” ~ Psalm 42:5
There is so much information flowing from many sources in these days of the pandemic. I find myself sifting through what is truth, mis-truth and out and out deception. I think we all have this curiosity to learn more and keep ourselves up-to-date but sometimes this focus can become all consuming. One wonders how healthy is this need.
I believe, at this time in particular, we need to consider what words we allow to seep into our hearts, soul and body. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us “Death and life are in the power of the tongue. And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequence of their words.”
We make daily choices on what we feed our minds and spirits. The words we listen to find a resting place, sometimes without us even fully understanding their impact. Words seep into our very being and souls. Our emotions, thoughts and dreams absorb their essence. We process them at multiple levels whether in our waking hours, dreams or sleepless nights.
Do we allow words of fear and panic to reverberate across the garden of our hearts or the shadows of our thoughts? Words often driven by a fear-based agenda and head-line driven media. Do they calm our fears and anxieties or do they serve to exacerbate our struggles?
Might we make another choice? We can choose to feed on Him – the Living Word. Isaiah 55:2 invites us to consider our choice of diet. “ Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and delight yourself in abundance.”
God’s Word speaks words of life, hope, peace and joy into our souls. In Psalm 42:5, David knew the power of focusing on the truth of knowing an unchanging and all-knowing God and worshiping Him in times of stress, anxiety and fear.
Through David’s worship and meditation on stories he had been told by his father and forefathers – stories of God’s promises, protection and blessings - David positioned himself to focus on the faithfulness of His God. In this place, he was anchored in the peace and rest of the Lord.
Personally, I made a choice, a significant one for me, as my wife will attest, I read my newsfeeds only once a day. I have decided I need to guard my heart and mind, to intentionally spend time in the Word so I am encouraged daily and to find meaning and purpose in what God has called me to do each day.
In these days, whether you are worried about your health, finances, job, family or future, He invites us to feast on His goodness, faithfulness and provision. In that place, peace floods our beings and we are at rest!
