What Do You Value - Worry or His Ability?

“ What is man that you are mindful of him…” Psalm 8:4a
I recently listened to a podcast of a dear friend and mentor in which he addresses the issue of worry. Jesus was quite clear in His teaching that worry is to have no place in our lives.
The more I pondered this truth and let is settle into my heart and spirit, I realized how this ‘little fox’ has crept into my life and thinking more than once – maybe even daily, without my realizing it.
How many of us have experienced sleepless nights worrying about money issues? How many of us without realizing it, have sought to anaesthetize our anxieties through online shopping, binge eating out, or using alcohol or drugs, including sleeping pills, to help settle our thoughts and emotions.
Someplace along the way we have accepted and normalized worry as part of our everyday lives.
Worry at its core causes internal psychological and emotional distress. It has the ability to disrupt our lives. In short, it means we are anxious about our own ability to secure our own needs.
In light of Jesus’ directive in Matthew 6: 25 – 34, we were not created to worry. The birds are not worried, the lilies of the field are not worried nor the grass of the field. In fact, Jesus says we are to pursue His kingdom. We are to strive to see the larger picture of what He is doing amidst challenging times and circumstances.
What do we value the most in these days - our need for money and possessions or His kingdom? This pursuit impacts what we value most in life – either His kingdom or our temporal needs, and shapes what we pray for and where our thoughts rest.
Jesus encourages us to realize that life is more than food and clothes for our bodies. Worry can change nothing, becomes wasted energy and focus, all-consuming and yet is unproductive.
In allowing worry to receive all our attention and energy, we are displacing the Lord on the throne of our hearts. In actuality we are trusting the tangible when He wants to meet our needs.
He does promise to meet the basics like our needs for food and clothing. He provided manna and quail in the desert and looked after the herds. God looked after the Israelites clothes and sandals.
As my friend Alistair Petrie says “worry dethrones God and deifies man”. What a profound statement and startling reality.
I find myself wondering - have I put my trust in worrying about things like money, unemployment, inability to get the things I want in these days and what the future might hold? Or do I see the bigness of God and pursue Him while trusting His ability to provide for me the basics and cover the rest of my needs as He sees fit?
He does know the future and can you and I trust Him with ours?
