What Does a Wealth Line Mean?

“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.” ~ 1 Timothy 6: 17-18
Recently while preparing to do a radio show with my friends Dave and Rebecca Van Noppen on the “Let’s Talk Money” program, I was asked to respond to a question posed by a client – what is your wealth line? I had never heard the term ‘wealth line’ so had to give some thought as to what this concept might mean.
As I thought about this term, I concluded it had to do with knowing the amount of income you could live off of and use the additional monies for other purposes. I am not sure most of us have ever given this idea much thought – at least not myself.
There is this saying that the more money you make, the more you increase your spending. In other words, you spend according to your income level. Many believe that you should be guided by the 50/30/20 rule which simply means that you should be spending 50% of your monthly expenses such as rent, mortgage, monthly bills and groceries. Then 30% of your income should be spent on non-essential purchases like going out to eat and then 20% being placed in savings.
Those are interesting ratios which made me wonder if I as a Christian should I be doing likewise or is there another approach? Given all that we have been entrusted comes from the Lord, perhaps the question really should be – “Lord, how much do You want me to give back to you?”
I have heard of individuals who have established clear financial goals, seeking to give a certain percentage of their income each year and increasing that year over year. In the process, they have learned to live off of less and give more. However, many who have sought to live this way also testify that the Lord has multiplied their resources and they have seen the blessing of the Lord on their lives.
As I reflect upon the above verses from 1 Timothy 6: 17-18, I am reminded that I should not put my trust in money or mammon. I am to put my trust in the Lord as my Provider and seek to steward my resources well, looking to be obedient to all He asks of me in sharing my blessings with others.
I find myself further pondering the question – what does a wealth line mean for me? I think it may be a question each of us needs to ask ourselves on a regular basis as good stewards before the Lord.
What would your response be to this important question?
