Bringing Your Faith to Your Finances

“Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” ~ 2 Chronicles 20:15
As I reflect over the years of our married life, I see how there have been many occasions when I have allowed ourselves to get into financial trouble. Being the one responsible for the finances in our household, I made justifications for the ongoing debt issues. For me, this lifestyle appeared to be the norm amongst my peer group.
At times, the debt load seemed insurmountable. On other occasions, I just simply ignored and suppressed the emotions. There were occasions when things seemed manageable and our debts were paid off but being debt free was never a lasting state.
I have come to discover in the past few years that as we come to the Lord and present our finances to Him, He meets us where we are. He comes with His love and encouragement rather than the anticipated guilt and condemnation. If we open our hands and ask Him to lead us in this area, He comes alongside us and begins to take us by the hand. This does not mean a passive, observer role, but rather we are an active participant.
The above verse reminds us God will battle for us, but we need to show up and be actively present as the Lord battles on our behalf. This process often requires making steps of faith to step out in uncertain and unfamiliar ways to us.
Jesus demonstrates this feat as he fed the 5,000. He had compassion on the people because they were hungry. Rather than sending them off to the local market as His disciples suggested, He asked them what they had - five loaves and two fishes. Jesus blessed these meagre supplies and asked the disciples to distribute the goods. Five thousand men’s mouths were filled and twelve baskets were left over. God met the people right where they were at.
Their mealtime took a simple act of releasing five loaves and two fishes to Jesus. He looked to His father as He blessed the bread and broke it up. The multitudes were fed and had their needs met. He desires to provide for us when we offer all that we have – as simple and meagre as those goods may be. He has the ability to multiply and do the supernatural. We engage with Him and give all that we have.
My wife and I have seen supernatural provision happen over and over again in our married lives as we surrender our finances and allow Him to lead, being obedient as He asks of us. He has met our needs as we sought to be submissive, multiplied our resources and provided supernaturally when we least expected it.
Five fishes and two loaves of bread in the hands of the Lord can yield great supply. Our money and possessions, released to Him, can yield untold miracles in the hands of the One who provides them in the first place.
