Jesus - Simply an Add-On?

“If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” – Matthew 19:21
I recently was listening to a podcast where the speaker shared some insights on the rich, young ruler that I had not heard before.
The young, rich ruler came to Jesus because he knew he had one missing element in his life – eternal life. He had everything else – the wealth, prestige, fine clothes, large home, lots of land and many employees. He thought the process was simply a matter of adding Jesus to his life.
Realizing he was missing something, the young, rich ruler came to Jesus to add the one thing he realized he was lacking. He reflected on his life and knew he had been diligent to keep all the laws as Jesus challenged him, but he wanted to know what did he have to do to obtain eternal life? What new change would it require? Or what formula need to be implemented?
The account tells us that the young man walked away sad after hearing Jesus’ directions to him. His possessions had shaped his worldview, identity and relationships with others.
Approaching the obtaining of eternal life as some sort of business transaction, he had wanted to make sure he added that one last thing to his life that would give him everything he thought he needed. If he could add “Jesus” to his life, he could obtain the blessings of the Lord on his health and business.
I wonder how many people approach their relationship with Jesus in this same manner. For some, the addition is similar to added insurance or a security blanket. The thought would never cross their mind that following Jesus would cost everything.
Peter was part of a fishing business with his two brothers, James and John. When Jesus extended an invitation to him, Peter left the partnership and business behind. Peter never looked back and was sold out for Jesus and gave his all.
What a contrast between the two men. The young rich ruler had the same invitation as Peter. Jesus invited the ruler to follow Him after selling what he had and giving the wealth to the poor. This choice required something much deeper than the ruler was prepared to offer and surrender. Jesus’ directions tested the true motives of his heart.
Wealth can create barriers in our relationship with Jesus. We can be a “Sunday” follower and never release our lives and our all to Him. Many people followed Jesus in His day but never embraced following Him whole heartedly.
May our hearts be aware of our motives in following Jesus and those things that create barriers like wealth and prestige. May they not hold us back from pursuing Him whole heartedly with pure motives. May we surrender all and keep Him, Jesus, the sole focus of our lives.
