“ His compassion never ends. It is only the Lord’s mercies that have kept us from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his loving-kindness begins afresh each day.” Lamentations 3: 22- 23
As I read the feeds on Facebook and quickly scan numerous blogs, there are many references to making New Year’s resolutions. I have never done so myself, rather seeking the Lord what He might have in store for the year. Others, like some of my friends, seek a specific ‘word’ on which to focus for the year. My wife’s word last year was ‘trust’ and the Lord took her on an amazing journey in gaining a better understanding as to its meaning.
I do know that as the year came to a close, I found myself looking at our finances and reflecting on how the year went. I was thankful that we were able to continue to be debt free while continuing to save. I did acknowledge that despite not following our budget closely, we made slow and steady gains in our savings and giving. In this sense, it was a good conclusion to the year.
I must confess that I did not hold tightly to our budget. Having moved into a new home the previous year, some of our anticipated costs were estimates, not having gone through seasons that generally suggest additional expenses like running the air conditioning during the summer months. In some areas I had overestimated and in others, underestimated.
One additional admission is that our spending, or perhaps I should say my spending, did get a little out of hand over Christmas. I am by nature a gift giver and so fell into some old patterns and habits in my purchases.
I am so thankful that God meets us where we are at in our financial journey. He never condemns or shames us. We acknowledge our mistakes, repent of how we have done things, and cry out to Him for help. He loves us regardless of where we are in the journey.
My prayer is that as we move into the new year, each of us will open up our hearts to His love and guidance in our managing and stewarding of our finances. It is never too late to change how we do things with our finances and our spending. He gives us choices and we can start with a new sense of commitment.
Taking the time to commit our money and possessions to Him, recognizing that every financial decision becomes a financial decision as we invite Him into the decision-making process. We pray over our finances and ask for His leading and guidance. Seeking the help of others when making significant finances decisions is a wise and Biblical approach.
Thankfully I can hit the re-start button with my finances. I will re-visit our budget, tweak it once again and commit to following it for the well-being of my wife and family.
How will your relationship with money change this year? It could be a new beginning for you as well.
